中央研究院院士, 哈佛大學數學系系主任丘成桐教授於98年 8月 6日拜訪本系, 並與本系老師進行對談. 丘院士對本系發展至為關心, 也對本系, 以及本系老師提出不少建議,並回答許多問題. 本系謝謝丘院士撥冗指教的寶貴意見. 並希望日後能有和丘院士多多交流的機會. 當天晚上, 由本校副校長馮達璇夫婦代表本校於遠東來來香格里拉飯店宴請丘院士夫婦.出席人員還包括教務長湯銘哲夫婦, 醫學院林其和院長,成大醫院林炳文院長, 藝術中心白明奇主任夫婦,物理系盧炎田主任. 本系由許瑞麟主任代表出席.。訪問花絮1、訪問花絮2、訪問花絮3、訪問花絮4 訪問內容：
丘院士主要是了解本系發展方向，各個老師的研究背景，以及老師最近之工作成果。本系老師則詢問一些最近學術研究潮流，如string theory的最新發展，以及數學在各領域應用之進展。丘院士均有具體說明，讓本系老師獲益良多。 |

【暑期課程公告】
國家理論科學中心將於98年7月21日至24日10:00 - 16:00於【國家理論科學中心 204 室】舉行暑期課程：數學模式與科學研究，主講人：郭鴻基教授(教育部國家講座教授、台灣大學大氣科學系終身特聘教授)，本短課程透過簡單數學模式與重要實用例子說明:1)控制方程式的尋求；2)解與分析；3)科學銓釋等三個建模過程。模式例子包含物理科學、生命科學、防疫學、生態學、地球科學以及人文社會科學等領域；除此之外課程也將討論掠食與被掠食交互作用，魚獲生態影響，以及消耗戰等重要古典數學模式。數學函數本身是無因次，科學量化卻有單位，課程也將介紹因次分析與尺度分析於科學研究的應用。課程先需為微積分與基礎微分
方程式知識。本課程的目的是以數學模式強化科學研究能力，協助學生學習數學模式，並且學習從資料建立理論，以及對理論的數值量化。
