TITLE | Classical geometry of surfaces in 3-space and soliton equations |
ABSTRACT |
Soliton equations are non-linear wave equations. They have traveling wave solutions and "sum" of solutions preserving their shapes and speeds after non-linear interactions (the so-called soliton solutions). Many soliton equations also arise in classical geometry of curves and surfaces in R^3. In this talk, I will use Richard Palais¡¦ computer visualization program to explain some beautiful properties of soliton equations and how these equations arise from the geometry of surfaces. |
