TITLE An Introduction to Okounkov Bodies

ABSTRACT Let X be an n-dimensional projective variety. In this talk, we will introduce the audience to a construction which associates a line bundle L on X with a convex body Delta(L) in the n-dimensional Euclidean space (known as the Okounkov body). This construction can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Newton polytopes, and it provides a bridge which allows one to use convex geometry to study certain numerical invariants of L, most notably its volume.
