TITLEAn Interdisciplinary Study for Optimizing Photonic Crystals Structures

ABSTRACT Finding maximum band gap is a key step of three dimensional photonic crystal structure optimization. Numerical simulations based on the Maxwell equations play an essential role to achieve the goal. However, the problem involves high dimensional structural parameter tuning and large-scale eigenvalue problems. The numerical optimization process thus becomes extremely time consuming, if not intractable.

We will demonstrate how we can identify the optimal structural parameters and solve the large-scale eigenvalue problems in an efficient way via interdisciplinary studies. The main tools include statistical meta-modelling, matrix analysis, parallel computing with GPU accelerations, and auto-tuning. Numerical results are promising, with a great potential for methodological researches and band-gap engineering applications.
