TITLE Some Thoughts on Inter-Disciplinary Research, a Case Study on Kinetic Theory and Gas Dynamics

ABSTRACT Inter-disciplinary research involves solid understanding of at least two distinct fields and therefore is not easy, even for leading mathematicians. In this talk, we illustrate this with examples in the kinetic theory and gas dynamics. We will start with a famous Panel Discussion chaired by von Neumann and attended by Heisenberg, von Karman and other leading mathematical scientists. Recent progresses and open research directions will also be mentioned.
