TITLEStochastic Analysis of Poroelastic Theory in Randomly Heterogeneous Porous Media

ABSTRACT Poroelastic theory has been widely applied in soil mechanics, earthquake hydrology and subsidence analysis. The theory couples the flow and stress to explain the water movement and soil deformation of a soil body. Since the theory is originally constructed for isotropic and homogeneous material, its applications to field data are often limited. We proposed a stochastic approach using the first-order second-moment method to extend the poroelastic theory for heterogeneous porous media. The stochastic governing equations were first constructed and then solved numerically.

The theory was applied to a one-dimensional case to demonstrate the use of the method. Boundary effects on the physical behaviors were also explored. The stochastic poroelastic theory provides useful statistical information of flow and deformation for uncertainty analysis.
